Hawes and Hardraw Force Circular: A Perfect Winter Walk in the Yorkshire Dales

As the chill of winter settles in and daylight fades early, there’s something magical about stepping out into the crisp, fresh air for a walk. I’m no stranger to winter hikes – the quiet beauty of the landscape, the solitude, and the chance to truly connect with nature all make those chillier days something to look forward to. With the right gear and mindset, winter walks can be exhilarating, grounding, and surprisingly peaceful.

Today, I’m excited to share one of my regular favourites: the Hawes and Hardraw Force Circular walk in the stunning Yorkshire Dales. It’s an ideal route for those looking to combine adventure with the serenity of winter landscapes. Whether you’re new to hiking or a seasoned walker, this route has something to offer.

Route Overview: Where It All Begins

The Hawes and Hardraw Force Circular is a moderate 8-kilometre loop that takes you through some of the best natural sights in the Yorkshire Dales. Starting from the charming market town of Hawes (DL8 3RK), the route takes you through picturesque countryside, past rolling hills, and, of course, to one of the most impressive waterfalls in the region – Hardraw Force (see more picture)

This walk is a great way to explore the Dales, offering a healthy balance of gentle paths and a few steeper inclines along the way, with plenty of spots to pause and take in the amazing scenery. The trail is well-maintained, with clear signage, making it accessible for those with a good level of fitness. There are a few muddy patches (it is winter, after all), so sturdy footwear is a must.

How Long Is It?

The walk is approximately 9km, which is just the right distance for a winter afternoon hike. Depending on your pace and how often you stop to take photos or enjoy the scenery, you can expect to spend around 2-3 hours on the trail. The good news is that it’s not overly challenging – there are a few inclines and uneven surfaces, but overall, it’s a fairly easy route for hikers of most abilities. Just be prepared for some slippery patches, especially after rain or frost.

What Makes This Walk Special?

The Hardraw Force waterfall is the standout feature of this walk. It’s England’s highest unbroken waterfall, dropping an impressive 30 metres into a deep gorge. The walk takes you right up to the base of the waterfall, and the sight of the water tumbling down against a backdrop of moss-covered rocks is simply breathtaking. If you’re visiting during winter, you might catch the falls in a different light – the icy edges and the mist rising from the base add an ethereal quality to the landscape.

Along the trail, you’ll also pass through meadows, alongside rivers, and through ancient woodlands, which all add to the exhilarating and peaceful experience during the winter months. There’s a relaxing solitude that you’ll find hard to match, especially when the paths are quiet, and the air is crisp.

Where Can I Park?

Parking in Hawes is easy – the town has several car parks, including a few right by the start of the trail. Most are free for the first couple of hours, and you’ll have plenty of space to leave your car without the worry of parking fines. For a longer walk, there’s no need to rush, so you can enjoy the trail at your own pace.

Dog-Friendly or Not?

Yes, dogs are welcome on this route, making it a great option for a winter walk with your little friends. However, you’ll want to keep an eye on the terrain as it can get a little tricky, particularly around the waterfall area. Some parts of the trail might not be suitable for all dogs, especially if they struggle with steep or slippery paths. Make sure to check the details and assess your dog’s ability before you set out. My own dog, Aggie, is a trooper on similar walks, so I wouldn’t hesitate to bring her along for this one.

Fitness Level: How Fit Is Fit Enough?

While the Hawes and Hardraw Force Circular is manageable for most walkers, it does require a certain level of fitness, particularly due to some steep sections. It’s a moderate walk, but you’ll still get a decent workout, especially on the climb to Hardraw Force (location) itself. A good level of stamina is essential, but it’s not overly strenuous. If you’re a regular hiker or just enjoy a brisk walk, you’ll be fine.

What Should I Pack?

Winter walks come with their own set of essentials. Here’s what I recommend bringing for this particular trail from my own experience:

Sturdy, waterproof boots: The terrain can get muddy and slippery, and you’ll want good grip.

Warm, breathable layers: The weather can change quickly, so layers are your friend. A good base layer and a waterproof jacket are must-haves.

A cosy fleece or sweater: Essential for added warmth, helping you stay comfortable when temperatures drop unexpectedly. - SHOP NOW

Hat and gloves: You might not realize how cold it can get until you’re out there, so be sure to bring gloves and a hat to keep the chill at bay.

Waterproof socks: Especially in the Dales, you’ll encounter wet ground, and waterproof socks will keep your feet dry and comfortable.

Snacks and water: It’s always a good idea to bring some refreshments, even for shorter hikes. A hot drink from your thermos can make all the difference on a winter’s day.

Why This Walk Made My Favourites List

What I love about the Hawes and Hardraw Force Circular is the way it combines peaceful countryside with a real sense of adventure. The stunning waterfall, the quiet, open spaces, and the sense of isolation make this one of those walks that stays with you long after you’ve finished. The winter season adds a whole new layer of beauty to the landscape – from the frost on the trees to the winter wildlife that you might spot along the way.

Plus, there’s something incredibly invigorating about getting outside in the winter months. It’s a great way to stay active, boost your mood, and top up your Vitamin D when the sun’s hours are limited. There’s no better way to appreciate the beauty of winter than a walk like this, with fresh air and views that take your breath away.

To top it all off, Hawes is home to an incredible fish and chip shop that’s perfect for warming up and refueling after your adventure. Treat yourself to a hearty meal – it’s the ultimate reward for a winter walk like this!

If you’re looking for a scenic, rewarding walk in the Yorkshire Dales, the Hawes and Hardraw Force Circular should be at the top of your list. With its stunning natural beauty, peaceful atmosphere, and manageable distance, it’s an ideal winter hike that will leave you feeling refreshed and recharged. And who knows – if you’re lucky, the pub or fish and chip shop in Hawes might just be open when you finish the walk, offering a well-deserved "feel-good meal" after a day spent in nature.
